The RACGP has updated the reprocessing section of the Infection prevention and control guidelines (IPC Guidelines) to support safer, more consistent reprocessing in general practice.
These updates align with Australian Standard AS/NZS 5369:2023 Reprocessing of reusable medical devices and other devices in health and non-health related facilities, translating a complex national standard into clear, practical guidance tailored for general practice. They provide a structured framework to support safe workflows, informed decision‑making, and consistent reprocessing across all aspects of care.
The key changes to the IPC Guidelines are tabled on the overview page of the reprocessing section.
An implementation period until 1 January 2028 will apply. This means:
- practices are not expected to meet all requirements immediately
- there is time to review current processes and plan for change
- implementation can occur in a staged and manageable way.
These updates are designed to support practices by providing greater clarity, structure and time to implement changes with confidence.
The RACGP has developed resources to support implementation, including:
- a FAQ addressing common questions
- a video overview explaining the key updates.
