24 October- World Polio Day

October 24

World Polio Day draws attention to the global mission to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio) once and for all. Polio, a severe and potentially fatal illness caused by the poliovirus, was targeted for global eradication by the World Health Assembly in 1988. Observed annually on 24 October, World Polio Day raises awareness of the vital role of vaccination in protecting every child from this debilitating disease. It also recognizes the dedication of parents, healthcare professionals, and volunteers whose relentless efforts bring the world closer to eliminating polio.

To secure a polio-free world for future generations, it is essential to uphold strong immunization coverage, conduct rigorous surveillance to detect any resurgence of the virus, and remain prepared to act swiftly in case of an outbreak.
